Golden orthezia

The Golden Orthezia (scientific name Praelongorthezia aurea) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Ortheziidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects, often categorized alongside mealybugs, are known for their sap-sucking behavior which significantly drains plant vitality and promotes the onset of secondary diseases.

This pest affects a diverse range of host plants, including citrus species, various ornamental shrubs, and greenhouse crops. Its ability to thrive in controlled environments makes it a particularly problematic nuisance in nursery management, where it can rapidly spread among dense collections of ornamental and fruit-bearing plants.

The life cycle of the Golden Orthezia involves the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females possess a distinct, waxy ovisac that provides protection for their eggs and themselves. This waxy covering acts as a natural barrier against environmental stressors and conventional contact-based pesticides, complicating eradication efforts.

The primary damage results from the insects feeding on phloem sap, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage and blocks the stomata, severely inhibiting the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently.

Control measures are most effective when implemented early. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices should be employed, consisting of:

• Quarantine procedures for newly introduced plants;
• Physical removal and destruction of heavily infested plant tissues;
• Application of systemic insecticides that are absorbed into the plant vascular system;
• Encouraging natural predators or using horticultural oils to disrupt the waxy protective layer.
