Long-tailed mealybug

Praelongorthezia praelonga

Description

The long-tailed mealybug (Praelongorthezia praelonga) is a significant pest belonging to the Ortheziidae family. Originally native to tropical regions of the Americas, this insect has become a serious problem in various parts of the world due to global trade, infesting both orchard crops and ornamental plantings.

This species is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide range of host plants. It is particularly notorious for damaging citrus species, such as oranges, lemons, and limes. Additionally, it frequently affects coffee plants, cocoa, avocado, and various ornamental plants like crotons and hibiscus, often found in greenhouses and outdoor plantations.

The life cycle consists of eggs, several nymphal instars, and adults. Adult females are distinguished by their characteristic white, waxy ovisac. They produce several generations per year depending on temperature and humidity, which allows the population to explode quickly if natural predators are absent or disrupted by broad-spectrum pesticide use.

Damage is caused by the insects feeding on the sap of the plant, primarily on the undersides of leaves and along young stems. This feeding causes chlorosis, leaf drop, and stunted growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the plant's photosynthesis process.

  • Implement regular scouting for early detection of white waxy colonies.
  • Use systemic insecticides that circulate within the plant tissues.
  • Apply horticultural oils to dissolve the waxy protective layer of the insect.
  • Encourage biological control agents like ladybird beetles.
  • Maintain proper pruning to improve air circulation and pesticide coverage.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Because the waxy covering provides a natural shield against contact chemicals, systemic insecticides are generally more successful. Combining chemical control with cultural practices, such as removing heavily infested plant parts and managing ants that protect the mealybugs, is essential for maintaining healthy crops.
