The marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) belongs to the order Decapoda and the family Cambaridae. It is a highly specialized invasive species that reproduces exclusively through obligate parthenogenesis. This means every individual is a female capable of producing genetically identical offspring, allowing a single crayfish to establish a self-sustaining population in a new location.

While not a typical agricultural pest of crops, the marbled crayfish is a major threat to agricultural water management infrastructure. By burrowing into the banks of irrigation canals, reservoirs, and rice paddies, these crayfish compromise the structural integrity of earthworks. This leads to water loss, soil erosion, and the potential failure of hydraulic structures essential for farming.
