Description
The genus Proceras belongs to the family Crambidae within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are recognized as significant pests of various cereal crops, predominantly inhabiting tropical and subtropical regions. The most economically damaging species within this genus is Proceras polychrysa, commonly referred to as the rice stem borer.
This pest primarily attacks crops such as rice, sugarcane, maize, and sorghum. The larvae penetrate the stalks of the host plants, where they feed on the inner tissues. This activity disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, which significantly weakens the plant structure and hampers normal grain development.
The life cycle of Proceras is highly synchronized with the growth stages of its host plants. Adult females deposit egg masses on the leaves. Once the larvae hatch, they quickly bore into the stems. This concealed lifestyle inside the plant protects them from environmental factors and makes conventional pesticide applications less effective if timed incorrectly.
The characteristic sign of an infestation is the appearance of 'dead heart' symptoms, where the central leaf of the plant turns yellow and dies. In more advanced stages, the damage leads to stalk breakage, lodging, and a total loss of the panicle or ear. A high infestation level can result in severe yield reduction, sometimes exceeding 50% of the potential harvest.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Proceras. Effective strategies include:
- cultivation of pest-resistant varieties;
- proper timing of planting to avoid peak moth activity;
- destruction of crop residues post-harvest to kill overwintering larvae;
- application of systemic insecticides;
- release of biocontrol agents like Trichogramma wasps.
