Proeulia auraria is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. Native to South America, particularly Chile, this species is known for its impact on various horticultural crops, requiring strategic intervention to prevent economic losses in commercial orchards.
The host range of this leafroller is quite extensive, encompassing diverse fruit and berry crops. It is notably recognized as a major pest of grapevines, apples, pears, avocados, citrus fruits, and blueberries. The adaptability of this species makes it a persistent challenge for modern agricultural production.
The life cycle of the insect consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The population size and number of annual generations are highly influenced by regional climatic conditions. Larvae typically hibernate in protective shelters, such as bark crevices or within leaf litter, emerging in the spring to resume their feeding cycle.
The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on buds, young leaves, and developing fruit. By webbing leaves together, they create protective feeding sites. When feeding on fruit, they damage the epidermis, which not only causes direct yield loss but also exposes the crop to secondary fungal pathogens and spoilage.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Control measures include monitoring flight activity using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately. Additionally, orchard sanitation, such as the removal and destruction of fallen leaves and infested fruit, is a crucial practice for reducing overwintering populations.
