Prospaltella

Prospaltella taeniata is a minute Hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Aphelinidae. While often studied for its parasitic role in regulating insect populations, it is considered a significant organism in greenhouse management, requiring precise identification and monitoring to maintain plant health.

This species primarily infests greenhouse-grown crops, including citrus, exotic flowers, and various vegetables. It typically targets host insects such as scale insects or whiteflies, but in unbalanced environments, its presence can be associated with overall plant decline and yield losses in protected agriculture.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female wasp inserts its eggs directly into the host, where the larvae feed and develop. Optimal temperature and humidity levels are critical factors that accelerate reproduction rates, allowing the population to reach damaging levels within short periods.

The damage caused by these insects is often indirect, as they weaken the host plant's physiology. Visible symptoms include yellowing of leaves, stunted development of young shoots, and an increased susceptibility to fungal or bacterial infections due to the plant being in a stressed state.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. Strategies include:
