Prosternon

Prosternon is a genus of insects belonging to the family Elateridae, commonly known as click beetles. The larvae of these beetles, known as wireworms, are notorious agricultural pests. While adult beetles are generally harmless to crops and feed on plant foliage or nectar, the soil-dwelling larvae can cause devastating damage to the roots and underground parts of various commercial crops.

The primary crops affected by Prosternon wireworms include cereals, maize, sunflowers, potatoes, and various root vegetables. The larvae inhabit the upper layers of the soil, feeding on seeds, germinating plants, and the subterranean parts of established crops. This feeding behavior often leads to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the complete death of the plant population.

The biology of Prosternon follows a multi-year development cycle. The complete metamorphosis from egg to adult takes several years, during which the larvae remain in the soil. They are highly responsive to soil environmental conditions, such as temperature and moisture, often moving deeper into the soil during extreme heat or dry spells to survive, only to return to the root zone when conditions improve.

The economic impact of these pests is significant due to their persistence in the soil. Damage is characterized by irregular holes and tunnels in roots and tubers, which significantly reduces crop quality and creates pathways for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens. These pathogens can cause root rot, further exacerbating the damage caused directly by the wireworm activity.
