Description

Prosternon tessellatum is a species of click beetle belonging to the Elateridae family. These beetles are characterized by their ability to flip themselves into the air with a clicking sound when placed on their backs. While adult beetles feed primarily on plant foliage or nectar and cause minimal damage, their larvae, commonly known as wireworms, are significant agricultural pests.

The larvae are polyphagous and cause damage to a wide range of crops including cereals, potatoes, corn, and sugar beets. They live underground, attacking germinating seeds, young roots, and the subterranean parts of stems. This subterranean behavior makes them particularly destructive, as the damage often remains unnoticed until significant stand loss has already occurred in the field.

The life cycle of this beetle is complex and spans several years, typically 3 to 4 years for the larval stage. Eggs are laid in the soil near host plants. As the larvae develop, they move vertically through the soil profile based on temperature and moisture levels. They overwinter deep in the soil, which helps them survive unfavorable environmental conditions and increases the difficulty of control.

Damage caused by wireworms includes thinning of crops, stunted growth, and reduced yield quality. By boring into tubers and taproots, they create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary infections such as rots and wilting. High larval densities can result in complete failure of crop establishment in localized patches of a field.

Effective management and control measures focus on:

  • Strategic crop rotation to disrupt the wireworm life cycle.
  • Thorough tillage operations such as deep plowing to expose larvae to birds and predators.
  • Seed treatment with appropriate insecticides to protect seeds and seedlings during the critical germination phase.
  • Weed management to eliminate food sources and egg-laying sites for adult beetles.
  • Soil pH adjustment through liming, which can create an unfavorable environment for wireworm development.
