Description
Systematic position. The Ixora soft scale (Protopulvinaria ixorae) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. These insects are specialized plant parasites often found in tropical environments and controlled environments like greenhouses where they can thrive year-round.
Host plants. The primary hosts include various species of Ixora, Gardenia, Ficus, and other broad-leaved ornamental plants. Due to its adaptability, this pest can occasionally infest other tropical foliage, significantly affecting the aesthetic value of indoor botanical collections.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. The adult females are sessile, permanently attaching themselves to leaf veins. They produce a waxy ovisac to protect their eggs. The crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving across the plant before settling down to feed.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. By sucking sap, the insects cause yellowing (chlorosis), leaf distortion, and stunted growth. The honeydew excreted by the scale attracts sooty mold, which grows as a black film over the foliage, hindering photosynthesis and potentially leading to leaf abscission in severe infestations.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial. Early detection through regular monitoring is key. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is highly effective against settled adults and nymphs. Furthermore, applying horticultural oils can help manage populations by suffocating the insects, provided the applications are thorough and frequent.
