Mango shield scale (Protopulvinaria mangiferae) is an insect belonging to the family Coccidae, order Hemiptera. This pest is widely recognized for its impact on tropical and subtropical fruit production. As a sucking insect, it thrives in warm climates and protected growing environments, posing a constant threat to various ornamental and fruit-bearing species.

The host range of this species is quite diverse, primarily including mango, avocado, citrus, coffee, and several ficus species. It tends to colonize the underside of leaves and young stems. Because of its small size and the ability of the protective scale to blend in with leaf veins, infestations often go unnoticed until significant plant damage has occurred.

The life cycle involves distinctive stages, including eggs laid under a waxy test secreted by the female. Upon hatching, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the foliage to find suitable feeding sites. Their ability to disperse through wind, animal movement, or human intervention makes them difficult to contain once an infestation is established in an orchard or nursery.

The primary damage caused by Protopulvinaria mangiferae is due to sap depletion, which weakens the plant and stunts growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew encourages the growth of sooty mold. This fungal layer blocks sunlight from the leaves, severely hindering photosynthesis and resulting in yellowing, premature leaf drop, and overall reduction of plant vigor.

Effective management strategies should include the following steps:

  • Strict quarantine measures to prevent the introduction of infested plant material.
  • Regular inspection of the undersides of leaves and stems for early detection of scales.
  • Application of systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant and kill the insects during feeding.
