The Algerian psammodromus (Psammodromus algirus) is a lizard species belonging to the Lacertidae family, native to Mediterranean habitats. While primarily insectivorous, these reptiles can become agricultural pests in specific settings, particularly in greenhouse operations and vegetable production. Their presence can disrupt the delicate environment required for high-yield seedling development.
These lizards often target young vegetable plants, herbs, and soft fruits like strawberries. The primary damage occurs when they dig burrows or search for prey among the foliage, which leads to mechanical breakage of thin stems, the uprooting of young seedlings, and the exposure of roots to air, causing rapid wilting and plant death.
The life cycle is dictated by temperature and humidity levels. Activity peaks during the spring and summer months. Breeding involves laying eggs in sheltered, warm spots within the soil or ground cover. A high population density is typically linked to overgrown areas, mulch, or dense debris that provides ample protection and creates an ideal microclimate for their survival.
