Pselliopus barberi is a species of assassin bug (family Reduviidae) within the order Hemiptera. While many members of this family are exclusively predatory, this species often exhibits facultative phytophagy. This dual behavior allows it to feed on both small insect prey and plant sap, making it a significant subject of interest for agricultural entomology.
Native primarily to North America, this bug is frequently observed on a variety of woody ornamentals, fruit trees, and occasionally field crops. Pselliopus barberi tends to inhabit the foliage and terminal shoots of plants, where it efficiently utilizes the microhabitat for hunting smaller insects and accessing vascular plant tissues.
The life cycle follows a standard hemimetabolous pattern: egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Overwintering occurs in the adult phase, typically sheltered within leaf litter, loose bark, or dense vegetation. As temperatures rise in the spring, the insects emerge to commence feeding and reproduction, with the number of generations per year correlated with the local climate.
Damage is caused by the insertion of the rostrum into plant tissues. These punctures often lead to localized necrosis and yellowing, which significantly impairs the photosynthetic capability of the affected leaves. In addition to mechanical damage, the salivary secretions injected by the bug can disrupt hormonal balance in the plant, resulting in curled or stunted growth of young foliage.
