It is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to infest various plants, particularly citrus species, leading to severe economic losses in both orchard and nursery environments.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets citrus crops such as lemons, oranges, and mandarins. However, it also has a wide range of secondary hosts, including various tropical and subtropical ornamental plants commonly grown in greenhouses and interior landscapes, making it a persistent threat to indoor horticulture.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the Eastern citrus mealybug includes the egg stage, nymphs, and adults. Females are characterized by a waxy, white, mealy appearance and are relatively sedentary. They typically lay eggs within protective waxy ovisacs. The development rate is highly dependent on temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the generation time and the overall population growth.

Damage and economic impact: Mealybugs feed by inserting their stylets into plant tissues and extracting sap. This feeding process results in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and sometimes complete defoliation. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from reaching the leaves, thereby inhibiting photosynthesis and severely reducing the market value of the produce.
