Pigeon fly

The pigeon fly (Pseudolynchia canariensis) is a specialized ectoparasite belonging to the Hippoboscidae family within the order Diptera. While not a direct threat to field crops, it is a significant pest in poultry science and pigeon breeding, causing serious health issues for avian hosts through its blood-feeding habits.

The primary hosts of this species are domestic and wild pigeons. The parasite is highly host-specific but can affect other avian species in close proximity. In professional lofts and poultry houses, these flies can cause severe infestation levels, leading to significant economic losses for breeders.

The biology of Pseudolynchia canariensis is unique due to its viviparous reproduction. The female produces a mature larva that pupates immediately. These pupae are often found in the bird's nesting materials, floor cracks, and crevices of the loft, making them difficult to eradicate through simple cleaning methods.

Damage caused by the pigeon fly includes intense irritation, anemia due to blood loss, and damage to feathers and skin. Furthermore, they are notorious vectors for the blood parasite Haemoproteus columbae. This pathogen causes avian malaria-like symptoms, which can be fatal to squabs and cause chronic health issues in adults.
