Avocado thrips
Pseudophilothrips perseae
Description
Systematic position. Avocado thrips (Pseudophilothrips perseae) belong to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. This pest is a specialized herbivore that specifically targets avocado trees, making it a significant concern for commercial and domestic avocado cultivation.
Crops and economic importance. The primary host is the avocado tree (Persea americana). The thrips prefer feeding on tender, expanding leaves and young shoots. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's normal growth patterns, leading to stunted leaf development and reduced vigor in young plants, which can significantly affect tree health in nurseries and orchards.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, two larval stages, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. Adults are dark-colored and mobile, allowing them to spread effectively across the canopy. Under optimal warm and humid conditions, the species completes its life cycle relatively quickly, leading to multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.
Character of damage. Infestations are characterized by leaf curling, spotting, and the presence of dark fecal deposits on the undersides of leaves. The feeding mechanism creates gall-like deformities and necrotic spots that interfere with photosynthesis. Severe damage leads to foliage yellowing, early abscission, and potential dieback of tender apical meristems.
Management strategies. Effective control relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Regular scouting of the canopy is essential to detect early infestation. Management practices include:
- Promoting natural enemies such as predatory mites and pirate bugs.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts.
- Applying selective, systemic insecticides when populations exceed economic thresholds, while ensuring rotational use to prevent insecticide resistance.
