Description
The grey parrot, known as the African grey or Congo grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus), belongs to the order Psittaciformes and the family Psittacidae. While globally recognized as a companion animal, in its native African range, these birds are considered significant agricultural pests due to their tendency to forage in large flocks on cultivated crops.
Their natural diet consists of nuts, seeds, fruits, and berries. However, agricultural encroachment into their habitats has forced these birds to adapt to human-grown crops. Common targets for grey parrots include maize, sorghum, millet, and a variety of orchard fruits such as oil palm fruits, mangoes, and citrus, often resulting in significant economic losses for local farmers.
The biology of the species involves complex social structures and high levels of intelligence. They nest in tree hollows and travel considerable distances in search of food. Their activity patterns, usually concentrated in the early morning and late afternoon, allow them to exploit agricultural resources efficiently while avoiding human intervention during peak working hours.
The damage caused by grey parrots is both direct and indirect. They consume seeds and fruits directly, but their robust beaks also cause extensive mechanical damage to stalks, branches, and cobs. This damage exposes plants to fungal infections, moisture, and further insect pests, which drastically reduces both the yield quantity and the market quality of the harvest.
Integrated bird management strategies are necessary to mitigate their impact on agricultural operations:

- Strategic deployment of visual repellents like reflective tapes and decoys.
