The white-legged psyllid (Psylla albipes) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. These small insects are known to be sap-sucking pests that target specific host plants, often causing physiological stress to the colonized trees.
The species primarily infests plants within the Salicaceae family, specifically willows (Salix) and poplars (Populus). Their host specificity makes them a particular concern for forestry plantations, nurseries, and ornamental landscapes where these trees are widely planted.
Regarding their life cycle, Psylla albipes overwinter as adults, seeking shelter in tree bark crevices or leaf litter. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to lay eggs on the newly developing foliage, leading to the development of nymphs that progress through several instars before reaching adulthood.
The damage caused by the white-legged psyllid is primarily observed on young shoots and leaves. Affected foliage often curls, turns yellow, and may drop prematurely. Furthermore, the nymphs secrete honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, blocking photosynthesis and weakening the host plant.
Effective management strategies involve a combination of biological and chemical control. Regular monitoring of the population during the spring is crucial. If the infestation reaches economic thresholds, applying selective insecticides during the nymphal stage can significantly reduce the population and minimize long-term impact on tree health.
