Description
The boxwood psyllid (Psylla buxi) is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. It is a major pest of boxwood (Buxus species), causing significant ornamental damage to hedges, topiaries, and landscape shrubs across temperate regions.
The pest specifically targets young boxwood foliage. Because it prefers the tender, developing leaves at the tips of new growth, it often inhibits the plant's natural development, leading to stunted shoot elongation and a cluttered, deformed appearance of the entire canopy.
The lifecycle of the boxwood psyllid is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. Nymphs overwinter in the axils of buds or on the bark. As soon as temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding, producing a white, waxy, cotton-like substance that coats their bodies and protects them from predators and environmental factors.
The most distinctive symptom of infestation is the curling of new leaves. As the nymphs feed, they induce the leaves to cup or fold inwards, creating a tight gall structure that resembles a small cabbage head. This curling not only ruins the plant's aesthetic appeal but also provides the nymphs with an ideal environment for feeding protected from many contact insecticides.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural control involves pruning and disposing of infested terminal shoots during the spring before the nymphs mature into adults. If chemical intervention is necessary, apply systemic insecticides during the early stages of spring growth. For optimal results, treatments must be timed carefully; once the leaves have curled, systemic products are preferred over contact sprays to ensure the insecticide reaches the hidden pests.
