Hawthorn sucker

Psylla peregrina

Description

The Hawthorn sucker (Psylla peregrina) is a small sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This pest is a common inhabitant of gardens and woodlands where hawthorn trees grow, often causing visible damage during the spring growing season.

Its primary host plant is the hawthorn (Crataegus), which it colonizes during the early stages of bud burst. While primarily restricted to this host, in some instances, it may be found on related species within the Rosaceae family. The presence of these insects can significantly impact the aesthetic appeal and vigor of hedge or specimen trees.

The biological cycle begins with eggs overwintering on the bark of twigs. As temperatures rise in early spring, nymphs hatch and congregate around the developing buds. They feed by piercing the plant tissue to suck sap, progressing through several nymphal instars before reaching adulthood.

Damage is characterized by the curling and distortion of leaves, which often become sticky due to the honeydew excreted by the nymphs. This sugary secretion is a catalyst for sooty mold, which coats the foliage, blocks sunlight, and hampers photosynthesis, eventually leading to reduced plant vitality.

Effective management requires monitoring the trees during the early growth phase. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides shortly after hatching occurs. Cultural practices, such as maintaining healthy tree vigor and ensuring proper pruning to improve air circulation, also help in reducing the severity of infestations.

  • Monitor bud burst for signs of early nymphs.
  • Apply contact insecticides during the early infestation stage.
  • Prune and destroy severely infested terminal shoots.
  • Encourage beneficial predators like lacewings and ladybirds.
