Pterolophia is a genus of longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera). These beetles are known for their intricate camouflage, which closely mimics the texture and color of tree bark. This makes them difficult to identify in the field, often leading to delayed detection until significant damage has occurred.

This pest affects a variety of woody plants, including various fruit trees and ornamental species. The larvae are primarily wood-boring, causing structural harm to host trees by feeding on the subcortical layers. These insects are often considered opportunistic pests that thrive in stressed or weakened plant environments.

The life cycle of Pterolophia involves the female laying eggs into bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the cambium and xylem. Their development involves several larval instars, during which they create extensive gallery systems that disrupt the tree's nutrient and water transport mechanisms, often weakening the structure from within.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by wilting foliage, branch dieback, and the presence of frass or sap weeping from entry holes. If left unchecked, the larvae can girdle the tree branches or trunks, significantly reducing the vigor of the plant and, in severe cases, causing complete tree mortality.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining tree health is the first line of defense. Sanitation is crucial; all infested branches must be pruned and properly disposed of to prevent the spread of the next generation of beetles. During the adult flight period, applying contact or systemic insecticides can help manage population levels and prevent further egg-laying.
