Ptilophora is a genus of moths belonging to the family Notodontidae (prominents). The most notable species, Ptilophora plumigera, is a fascinating insect that has evolved to fly during the late autumn months, often being active when temperatures are relatively low compared to other moth species.

This pest primarily affects deciduous trees, with a strong preference for maples (Acer species). Other hosts include beech, lime (linden), and oak trees. While they do not usually cause devastating agricultural losses, their feeding habits can impact the health of ornamental trees and forest stands.

The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adults emerge in late autumn to mate and lay eggs, which serve as the overwintering stage on the host plant's twigs. Larvae emerge in the spring, coinciding with the bud burst, and feed voraciously on the developing foliage until they descend to the soil to pupate.

Damage caused by Ptilophora larvae is primarily defoliation. As the caterpillars grow, their appetite increases, leading to significant consumption of leaf tissue.
