Plumed Prominent

The Plumed Prominent (Ptilophora plumigera) is a moth belonging to the family Notodontidae. It is recognized as a forest and garden pest that primarily impacts broad-leaved trees. The adult moth is characterized by its late flight season, occurring in late autumn, and the males exhibit distinct feathery antennae, which gives the species its common English name.

The primary host plants for this species are various maples (Acer species). The larvae, or caterpillars, are strictly herbivorous and focus their feeding on the foliage of these trees. While their preference for maple is distinct, they are occasionally documented on related deciduous species, depending on the local availability of hosts in forests and urban landscapes.

The life cycle of the Plumed Prominent is remarkably adapted to temperate climates. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, with the eggs attached securely to the twigs of host plants. Upon the arrival of spring, synchronizing with the bud burst of the maple trees, the larvae hatch and begin their intense feeding period, growing through several instars before descending to pupate in the soil during the summer.

The damage caused by the larvae involves the consumption of leaf tissues, often leading to skeletonization or complete removal of leaf blades. Significant infestations result in severe defoliation of the canopy. For ornamental maples, this not only impacts the tree's health and vigor but also significantly degrades the decorative value of the garden or park area, making control measures necessary.

Effective management of Ptilophora plumigera requires an integrated approach. During the winter months, scouting for egg clusters can help estimate the upcoming population density. If control is needed, spraying with biological insecticides targeting early larval stages is highly effective and minimizes environmental impact. Maintaining a diverse ecosystem that supports natural predators of caterpillars is the most sustainable long-term strategy for preventing outbreaks.
