Brown spider beetle

The brown spider beetle (Latin: Ptinus villiger) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Ptinidae. This insect is a globally recognized stored-product pest, primarily found in warehouses, mills, granaries, and households, where it thrives on a variety of organic materials.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it infests a wide range of stored goods. While it is particularly destructive to cereal grains such as wheat, oats, and barley, it also readily attacks flour, processed cereals, dried fruits, seeds, spices, and even dried animal products. Its ability to survive in diverse conditions makes it a difficult pest to eradicate once it establishes a population.

The life cycle of Ptinus villiger follows complete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid directly into the food source. The larvae, which are small, curved, and white, feed internally on the stored material. Before pupating, they construct a characteristic protective cell or cocoon made from food debris and silken threads, which provides a refuge during their transition into the adult beetle stage.
