Description

Leche's twist moth (Ptycholoma lecheana) is a lepidopteran insect belonging to the family Tortricidae. This species is recognized as a significant pest in both orchards and natural forests, often causing visible damage to foliage and developing fruit in various temperate regions.

The pest targets a wide range of host plants, predominantly deciduous fruit trees including apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot. Beyond orchards, it is frequently observed on hawthorn, oak, birch, and maple, which makes it a persistent threat that can migrate from wild vegetation into agricultural areas.

The biological development of this pest follows a univoltine cycle, meaning it produces one generation per year. Winter is spent in the larval stage, with young caterpillars sheltering inside dense silk hibernacula located within bark crevices or under bud scales. In early spring, they emerge to feed on opening buds and young leaves.

The typical damage caused by the larvae involves spinning leaves together into rolled structures or clumps using silk webbing. Inside these shelters, the caterpillars feed on leaf tissues, causing skeletonization or irregular holes. Extensive feeding can lead to severe defoliation and damage to the fruit set, significantly reducing total harvest yield.

Management of this pest requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls such as pruning and bark maintenance can help reduce overwintering sites. Chemical control should be timed to coincide with the period when larvae leave their hibernacula. During outbreaks, target-specific insecticides should be applied to prevent widespread damage to the canopy.
