Description
Systematic position: Leche's twist moth (Ptycholoma lecheanum) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This moth is a well-known forest and orchard pest found throughout temperate regions, commonly recognized for its ability to damage foliage in various deciduous woody plants.
Host plants: This species is highly polyphagous. It frequently attacks a wide range of broad-leaved trees, including oak, lime, and birch. Furthermore, it is a significant pest in fruit orchards, causing damage to apple, pear, and plum trees, which can result in reduced fruit set and vigor.
Biology and life cycle: The species produces one generation per year. It overwinters as early-instar larvae within tough silk cocoons tucked into bark crevices. In spring, as buds break, the larvae emerge to feed on developing leaves. Pupation occurs in late spring or early summer within the rolled leaves, followed by adult emergence in summer.
Damage and pest status: Larval feeding is the primary source of injury. Larvae spin leaves together with silk into characteristic bundles or tubes. Inside these shelters, they skeletonize the leaves, often destroying the entire leaf lamina. In cases of severe infestation, the foliage loss can significantly weaken the tree's physiological state.
