Description
The genus Pygaera belongs to the Notodontidae family within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are widely recognized in silviculture and arboriculture as significant defoliators that can cause severe damage to various broad-leaved trees across temperate regions.
The primary host plants for Pygaera larvae include species of Populus (poplar), Salix (willow), and occasionally Betula (birch). Young trees in nurseries and shelterbelts are particularly vulnerable, as heavy infestation can stunt growth and drastically reduce the aesthetic and commercial value of the timber.
The life cycle of the moth consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves.
