Description
The Sigmoid prominent (Pygaera albosigma) is a moth belonging to the family Notodontidae. It is a well-known forest pest primarily found in North America, named for the distinct sigmoid (S-shaped) mark found on the forewings of the adult moth.
The primary host plants for this species are members of the Salicaceae family, specifically poplars (Populus spp.) and willows (Salix spp.). The larvae are specialized leaf-eaters, and in significant outbreaks, they can cause extensive defoliation of these trees in both natural forest settings and urban landscape plantings.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, typically consisting of one or two generations per year depending on the local climate. Adults emerge in the spring, and females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves.
