Description
Systematic position: Pygaera restitura is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Notodontidae. As an agricultural and forestry pest, it is recognized for its ability to impact the health of foliage-bearing trees within its native range.
Host plants: The pest primarily attacks broad-leaved deciduous trees. Its preferred hosts include various species of the genus Salix (willow) and Populus (poplar). These trees are highly susceptible to defoliation when the larvae are present in high densities.
Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on foliage. Pupation typically occurs within a cocoon, hidden within leaf litter or crevices in the bark, where the insect remains until the next generation emerges.
Nature of damage: Larval feeding is the primary cause of concern. Early-stage larvae skeletonize the leaves, while later-stage larvae consume entire leaves, leaving only the midribs and primary veins. Severe infestations can lead to complete defoliation, significantly reducing the tree's vigor and annual growth rate.
