The fire beetle (Pyrophorus noctilucus) is a prominent member of the Elateridae family within the order Coleoptera. While famously known for its bioluminescence, which is generated by organs on its pronotum, it functions as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, particularly during its larval stage.
The biology of this species is characterized by a long developmental cycle in the soil. The larvae, known as wireworms, live underground and consume plant roots, seeds, and stem bases. The duration of the larval stage allows them to cause sustained pressure on agricultural systems throughout several seasons.
