Description
Systematic position: The common bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) belongs to the order Passeriformes and the family Fringillidae. While ecologically important, this species can act as a significant pest in orchards and nurseries when natural food sources, such as tree seeds, become scarce during the winter months.
Affected crops: Bullfinches primarily target fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. Their diet includes the buds of apple, pear, cherry, plum, and apricot trees. Decorative species such as mountain ash or lilac may also suffer, but commercial fruit orchards, particularly those with young or dwarf trees, are the most vulnerable to economic losses.
Biology and lifecycle: Bullfinches are sedentary or nomadic birds that form flocks in winter. They migrate into orchards as temperatures drop and natural forest food supplies are depleted. Their feeding activity is most destructive in late winter and early spring, just before the trees break dormancy, as the swelling buds become highly nutritious.
Nature of damage and harm: The birds consume the developing generative buds, which are the precursors to flowers and fruits. This leads to direct yield reduction. A single flock can strip a tree of most of its floral buds within a few days, significantly impacting the productivity of the orchard for the upcoming season and potentially stressing the trees.
Protection measures: To minimize damage, agriculturalists employ various non-lethal deterrent strategies:
- Installing visual deterrents like reflective tape or hawk-shaped kites to mimic predators.
- Using acoustic devices that emit alarm calls of birds of prey.
- Applying physical netting over individual trees in small-scale or high-value orchards.
- Providing alternative food sources away from the orchard to distract the flocks during peak winter months.
