Quesada

Quesada is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cicadidae (cicadas), order Hemiptera. The most prominent member of this group is Quesada gigas, a large insect species native to Central and South America. These pests are characterized by their significant size and a complex life cycle that is heavily dependent on the root systems of various woody plant species.

This pest inflicts considerable damage on a wide range of agricultural and forest crops. Among the host plants, one can find economically important species such as coffee, cocoa, citrus, and various fruit-bearing trees. The insect poses a severe threat particularly to young saplings, whose root systems are not yet developed enough to withstand significant pest pressure.

The biology of Quesada is defined by the long development of nymphs within the soil profile. Adult females lay eggs into the tree bark, and upon hatching, the nymphs drop to the ground and burrow into the soil. They spend several years feeding on the sap of tree roots, remaining hidden from the agronomist's observation until they emerge as adults for the mating phase.

Damage caused by Quesada includes both mechanical injury and the physiological depletion of the host plant. By feeding on the root sap, the nymphs inhibit tree growth, leading to leaf chlorosis and premature fruit drop. Meanwhile, adults may damage young shoots during oviposition, causing branch deformation and creating entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal infections.

Effective management of this pest requires a comprehensive approach, integrating cultural and chemical control strategies. Protection relies on consistent monitoring of adult populations and the health status of tree root zones. Key recommended practices for control include:
