Quesada sodalis cicada

Quesada sodalis is a species of large cicada belonging to the Cicadidae family within the order Hemiptera. Commonly found in tropical regions of the Americas, this insect is recognized as a significant agricultural and forestry pest due to its destructive feeding habits and substantial population density.

This pest targets a wide variety of woody plants and industrial crops. Major host plants include cocoa trees, coffee plants, eucalyptus, and various citrus species. The damage is cumulative, as both the immature stages living underground and the adult insects on the canopy contribute to the decline of the host plants.

The life cycle of Quesada sodalis is characterized by a prolonged subterranean phase. Nymphs feed exclusively on the roots of host trees, draining nutrients and weakening the plant's overall vascular system. Once mature, the cicadas emerge, molt into adults, and begin feeding on the sap of branches, further stressing the tree.

The damage caused by these insects is both direct and indirect. Direct feeding leads to wilting, branch dieback, and reduced fruit production. Furthermore, the oviposition scars made by females in the tree bark create entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can cause internal decay and structural failure of the plant.

Management and control measures involve several essential practices:

• Implementing physical barriers or netting for high-value young trees during peak emergence periods.
• Applying systemic insecticides when adult populations are at their highest to prevent feeding and mating.
• Monitoring the soil for root damage and utilizing biological control agents, such as nematodes, to reduce nymph populations.
• Ensuring optimal plant nutrition to help trees recover from sap-loss stress and improve their natural defensive capabilities.
