Description

Systematic position: The pest belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. Retinia albicapitana is a specialized pest of coniferous species, primarily pine, and presents a significant threat to young forest plantations and ornamental nursery stock by targeting terminal and lateral shoots.

Host plants: The primary host plants are species within the Pinus genus, with a strong preference for Pinus sylvestris. Larvae preferentially infest young trees, feeding on the soft tissues of developing shoots, which profoundly impacts the growth rates and overall structural development of the trees.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is typically univoltine, spanning one year. Adults emerge during the summer, and females oviposit on the base of buds or needles. Newly hatched larvae bore directly into the shoots to feed. They overwinter as larvae within these damaged shoots, where pupation occurs in the following spring.

Nature of damage and harm: The primary damage is caused by the larvae mining the pith of the shoots. This feeding behavior results in shoot dieback, stunted growth, stem deformation, and loss of apical dominance in young trees. Prolonged infestations significantly reduce the commercial timber value and cause aesthetic degradation in ornamental pines.
