Retinia metallica is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae (leafrollers). It is primarily recognized as an agricultural and forestry pest that specifically targets coniferous species, showing a marked preference for various species of pines (Pinus spp.) within its distribution range.
The host plants for this moth include young pine trees in nurseries and managed forest plantations. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, as the caterpillars bore into the tree's vital tissues to feed, which disrupts the vascular transport system and impairs the overall health of the host plant.
The biology of Retinia metallica is closely aligned with the seasonal growth cycles of pine trees. Adult moths typically emerge during the late spring or early summer to mate and lay eggs. The larvae develop within the terminal buds or young shoots, spending the winter inside these protective structures before completing their metamorphosis.
Damage symptoms are characterized by the presence of resin flow at the larval entry sites, shoot dieback, and significant deformation of the crown. In young stands, heavy infestation leads to stunted growth, loss of leader dominance, and permanent structural damage, which reduces the commercial quality of timber and ecological stability.

Monitoring populations through pheromone traps, removing and destroying infested plant material during the winter months, and applying biological or systemic chemical insecticides at the peak of egg hatching are standard practices for mitigating the damage caused by this pest.
