Description

Taxonomy: The red ring nematode (Rhadinaphelenchus cocophilus) belongs to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is a highly destructive plant-parasitic nematode that represents a significant threat to tropical palm horticulture.

Host plants: The primary host is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). However, it is also highly pathogenic to the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and several ornamental species. In tropical regions, this nematode can devastate entire plantations if left unmanaged.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of this pest is obligatorily linked to the South American palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum). The weevil acts as the essential vector. The nematodes enter the palm tissues through wounds created by the weevil’s feeding or oviposition activities, rapidly colonizing the plant's vascular system.

Damage symptoms and pathogenicity: The pest causes a characteristic red or reddish-brown ring in the stem tissue due to necrosis of the vascular bundles. Infected palms exhibit signs of chlorosis, leaf wilting, and reduced nut production. Once the heart rot begins, the tree usually dies within a very short period of time.

Control measures: Integrated pest management is critical for containment. Key strategies include:

  • Immediate destruction and burning of symptomatic trees.
  • Control of the weevil population using pheromone-baited traps.
  • Strict quarantine regulations to prevent the movement of infested material to clean areas.
  • Chemical treatment of pruning wounds to prevent entry by the vector.
