Systematic position: The ribbed longhorn beetle Rhagium fasciculatum belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. As a wood-boring beetle, it occupies a specific ecological niche, primarily targeting coniferous forest ecosystems across its distributional range in Eurasia.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects various coniferous species, with a strong preference for pine, spruce, and fir. It typically colonizes weakened, dying, or recently felled trees. The presence of windthrown wood or logs stored in the forest provides an ideal environment for the species to thrive and increase its population density.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle usually spans one to two years depending on the environmental temperature. Adults emerge in the spring and early summer. Females lay eggs deep within bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow beneath the bark to feed on the inner bark and cambium, creating extensive, irregular galleries that become clogged with frass.

Damage patterns and economic impact: The larval stage is responsible for the primary damage. By feeding on the cambium, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the tree, accelerating the decline of stressed trees. Furthermore, the extensive boring activities significantly reduce the timber quality, making the wood unsuitable for industrial use and creating entry points for secondary pests and wood-decay fungi.

Control measures: Management strategies are largely focused on silvicultural practices to prevent population outbreaks:

• Implementation of sanitary logging to remove infested trees before the next generation of adults emerges.
• Proper disposal of slash and debris to eliminate breeding sites.
• Utilization of trap trees to intercept and eliminate populations during the breeding season.
• Application of contact insecticides on logs stored in the forest when biological methods are insufficient.
