Description
The bulb mite (Rhizoglyphus engeli) is a member of the Acariformes order and the Acaridae family. This soil-borne pest is widely recognized for its devastating impact on various bulbous and tuberous plants, frequently causing severe losses in both agricultural and ornamental horticultural sectors.
The primary hosts for this mite include lilies, tulips, hyacinths, gladioli, onions, and garlic. Rhizoglyphus engeli is particularly attracted to damaged or decaying plant material, often penetrating the basal plate of the bulb to initiate feeding and subsequent structural decline.
Its biological cycle is highly dependent on environmental variables. The mite passes through several developmental stages, including egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Under adverse conditions, it can enter a specialized stage known as a hypopus, which is highly resistant to desiccation and chemical treatments, ensuring the survival of the population.
The damage caused by the mite is often insidious. By feeding on the internal scales and root tissue, the mite facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi, leading to rot. Affected plants typically show stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and eventual collapse of the entire bulb system.
