Description

Systematic position: The Pear fruit borer (Rhodophaea pirivorella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Pyralidae. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest that primarily targets pear trees (Pyrus spp.), posing a constant threat to orchard productivity in regions where it is established.

Crops and damage: The pest primarily attacks pear trees, although other related fruit species can occasionally be affected. The larvae damage buds, blossoms, and young fruits. By boring into the developing fruit, the larvae create internal tunnels that cause premature fruit drop and leave the remaining fruits deformed and highly susceptible to rot.

Biology and lifecycle: The species overwinters as early-stage larvae inside protective cocoons located within bark crevices or under bud scales. In early spring, as the tree breaks dormancy, the larvae emerge to feed on opening buds. Pupation typically takes place within the tree canopy in webbed nests, with the life cycle synchronized with the phenology of the pear tree.

Economic impact: Rhodophaea pirivorella is considered a significant threat to commercial pear production. Infestations result in major yield losses, reduced fruit quality, and increased management costs. Furthermore, the damage caused by larvae facilitates the entry of various fungi and bacteria, leading to further spoilage of the crop in the orchard.

  • Mechanical removal and destruction of infested buds and dropped fruits.
  • Scraping and cleaning of tree bark during dormancy to destroy overwintering sites.
  • Monitoring adult flight using pheromone traps to determine optimal spraying timing.
  • Application of selective insecticides during the green bud stage to target larvae before they penetrate the fruit.
