The Finnish dart (Rhyacia fennica) is a moth species belonging to the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Known as an agricultural pest, this moth has established itself in various regions, posing a recurring threat to field crops due to the feeding habits of its larvae, commonly referred to as cutworms.
The pest primarily targets cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to cereals, it can also affect forage grasses and various vegetable crops. The larvae are particularly dangerous during the early stages of plant growth, as they can cause significant thinning of stands and result in substantial yield losses.
The life cycle of the Finnish dart typically consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect usually overwinters as a larva in the soil. Because they spend the daylight hours buried in the soil, the presence of the larvae is often overlooked until significant crop damage is already visible.

Effective techniques include deep plowing to disturb the soil and expose overwintering larvae to predators or adverse weather. Farmers should also use insecticide treatments during peak larval activity periods.
