Description

The European pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia buoliana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a major pest of pine species, particularly in young forest stands and nursery plantations, where its larvae feed on the developing buds and shoots.

This insect primarily attacks trees of the genus Pinus. Species such as Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), Austrian pine, and Mugo pine are particularly susceptible. The moth is widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere and poses a significant threat to reforestation efforts and decorative pine plantings.

The life cycle involves one generation per year. Adult moths emerge in early summer, and females lay eggs on the needles or bark near the buds. Larvae hatch and mine into the buds to overwinter. In the spring, they resume feeding by boring into the new shoots, which causes the characteristic damage to the tree's architecture.

The damage is highly distinct, characterized by stunted, twisted, or «post-horn» shaped shoots. The loss of the terminal leader due to larval boring forces the tree to develop secondary leaders, resulting in crooked trunks and permanently deformed wood, which significantly reduces the economic value of timber.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling this moth include:

  • Applying systemic insecticides during the early larval stage in spring or shortly after egg hatch in summer.
  • Pruning and destroying infested shoots before adult emergence to reduce local population levels.
  • Using pheromone traps for monitoring flight activity and timing chemical applications.
  • Encouraging natural enemies and maintaining healthy, mixed-species stands to limit outbreaks.
