Description
The pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia dativa) is a significant pest of coniferous trees, belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This insect is widely recognized for its negative impact on young pine plantations, causing substantial damage to forestry operations and nursery stocks across its range.
The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and related species within the Pinus genus. Young trees, typically ranging from a few years old to early maturity, are the most susceptible to infestation as the succulent new growth and expanding buds provide optimal nutrition for the larvae.
The biological cycle of Rhyacionia dativa is typically univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year. The larvae overwinter within the host plant's shoots or in soil cocoons. Adults emerge in spring to mate, and the females lay eggs on the needles or near the buds of host trees, initiating the cycle of larval development.
The damage is primarily caused by larvae boring into the developing shoots and buds.
