Description

The Nantucket pine tip moth (Rhyacionia frustrana) is a destructive insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is widely recognized as a major pest of pine trees, significantly impacting both commercial timber production and ornamental plantings.

This pest primarily attacks various species of pine, with a strong preference for loblolly, shortleaf, and Virginia pines. It typically targets younger trees, particularly those in nurseries, seed orchards, and stands that have not yet reached maturity, often causing severe growth suppression.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The number of generations per year varies significantly by climate, ranging from two generations in northern areas to five or more in the southern parts of its range. Larvae are the stage responsible for the damage as they bore into the plant tissue.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by the mining of pine tips and buds. This feeding activity disrupts the tree's vascular system in the affected area, leading to tip chlorosis, flagging, and ultimate dieback of the leader or lateral shoots, which subsequently leads to stunted height growth and poor stem form.

Management strategies for controlling Rhyacionia frustrana include:

  • Utilizing pheromone traps for population monitoring and timing insecticide applications.
  • Implementing systemic or contact insecticides during peak larval emergence.
