Description
Rhyacionia monophylliana belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This specialized pest is primarily found in North America, where its life cycle is closely associated with specific pine species, most notably the single-leaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla).
The primary food source for the larvae of this species is the foliage of young pine trees. The pest exhibits a high degree of host specificity, preferring to develop inside the needle tissues, which makes early detection of an infestation quite challenging.
The biology of the moth consists of one generation per year. Adult moths lay their eggs on the surface of the needles. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the needle, creating mines. As they grow, larvae may move to adjacent needles, webbing them together to provide protection.
