Description
Rhyacionia zozana, commonly known as the Ponderosa pine tip moth, belongs to the family Tortricidae in the order Lepidoptera. This insect is a significant pest of pine forests, specifically targeting young trees and causing substantial growth deformities in plantation settings and nurseries.
The primary hosts of this species include Ponderosa pine and related conifer species. The damage is largely localized to the succulent terminal shoots. Because the moth prefers young, fast-growing trees, the economic impact is most severe in plantations where timber quality and tree height are primary management goals.
The life cycle of this moth is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adults emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs on the needles or scales of the buds. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the pith of the current-year shoots, where they remain protected while feeding until they pupate.
The characteristic damage symptom is the distortion or death of the leader shoot. As the larva consumes the interior of the shoot, the flow of nutrients is disrupted. This causes the shoot to bend, wither, or die, often resulting in the formation of multiple leaders or permanent stem deformities, which compromises the tree structure.
