Rhynchites cinnamomi

Rhynchites cinnamomi, commonly known as the apple bud weevil or simply a type of Rhynchitidae, is a significant pest affecting various fruit trees. Belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae, this beetle causes extensive damage to both pome and stone fruit orchards by feeding on buds, flowers, and young fruits.

The primary host plants for this pest include apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot trees. Rhynchites cinnamomi is most active during the spring season. The damage often begins when temperatures start to rise, coinciding with the bud break stage of fruit trees, which is when the trees are most susceptible to insect feeding pressure.

The life cycle of the beetle involves overwintering as adults within the soil. Once spring arrives, they emerge and migrate to the canopy of the host trees. The female weevil lays eggs in the tissue of leaves or young developing fruits. After the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the internal parts of the plant material, which often leads to premature shedding of fruits and leaves.

The damage caused by this pest can be severe, leading to substantial crop losses if left unmanaged. Beyond the direct loss of fruit, the feeding activity disrupts the metabolic processes of the tree, such as photosynthesis, and weakens the tree's health, making it more vulnerable to secondary infections or environmental stress factors.

Management strategies focus on reducing the population before it reaches critical levels. Agrotechnical practices, such as soil cultivation in autumn and spring, are effective for destroying pupae in the ground. Chemical control is often necessary during the pre-blossom phase to protect the buds, but it should be done carefully to minimize impact on beneficial pollinators.
