Mango stem borer

Rhytidodera bowringii, commonly known as the mango stem borer, is a destructive wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae (order Coleoptera). This insect is a significant concern for mango growers, as its larvae feed on the internal tissues of the tree, potentially killing the host if left unmanaged.

The distribution of this species is primarily concentrated in Southeast Asian countries where mango cultivation is prevalent. While the mango tree is its primary host, the borer can adapt to various woody plants, making it a persistent challenge for integrated pest management programs in tropical regions.

The biological cycle begins when adult females deposit eggs in the bark crevices of branches or trunks. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries. This boring activity disrupts the vascular system, preventing the tree from transporting water and essential nutrients effectively.

Symptoms of infestation include the presence of frass (a mixture of wood shavings and excrement) at the base of the tree or around exit holes. Infested trees typically show signs of canopy thinning, yellowing foliage, dieback of branches, and in severe cases, structural failure leading to the collapse of the tree under windy conditions.

Control strategies for the mango stem borer focus on preventing larval entry and eliminating existing populations. Effective measures include painting trunks with insecticidal paste, injecting systemic insecticides directly into larval galleries, and rigorously monitoring the orchard to prune and burn heavily infested branches immediately.
