Description
Systematic position. The Lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive primary pests of stored grain, capable of causing significant quantitative and qualitative losses in grain facilities.
Damaged crops. This pest is a serious threat to a wide range of stored agricultural products. It primarily infests wheat, rice, corn, barley, sorghum, and millet. In addition to raw cereals, it can also attack processed goods like pasta, flour, and occasionally dried vegetables or tubers.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with the species thriving in warm, dry climates. Females typically deposit eggs on the surface of the grain. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the grain kernel, where they feed and develop into adults. The entire development process can take as little as 3 weeks under optimal temperatures of approximately 30 °C.
Damage patterns and economic impact. Both adults and larvae cause severe damage by consuming the endosperm of the kernel. Unlike many other grain beetles, they are primary pests, meaning they can bore into intact, healthy grains. This activity results in the formation of large amounts of grain dust and frass, significantly reducing the market value and nutritional quality of the grain.
Control measures. Effective management of Rhyzopertha dominica relies on an integrated approach. The following practices are essential:
- Strict sanitation of grain storage facilities and equipment.
- Maintaining grain moisture content below 12% to inhibit larval development.
- Use of phosphine-based fumigation for bulk grain treatment when infestations are detected.
- Implementation of regular aeration and cooling of stored grain to prevent rapid population growth.
