Description
Ricania (Ricania speculum) is a member of the Ricaniidae family within the order Hemiptera. This invasive planthopper species is becoming a significant concern in agricultural landscapes globally, causing substantial economic losses due to its broad host range and rapid reproduction rate.
The pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast variety of plant hosts. It is particularly damaging to crops such as grapevines, tea plants, citrus trees, stone fruits, and various ornamental plants. Its ability to infest diverse vegetation makes it difficult to contain in mixed farming environments.
The life cycle of the species involves egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Eggs are deposited inside the succulent tissues of shoots, which allows them to survive through the winter. Nymphs emerge in the spring, feeding on phloem sap, and mature into winged adults by mid-summer, which then facilitate the spread of the population.
The damage caused by Ricania speculum is mainly due to phloem feeding and the subsequent excretion of honeydew.
