Ropalopus is a genus of beetles belonging to the Cerambycidae family, commonly known as longhorn beetles. These insects are recognized as significant pests in forestry and horticulture, as their larvae specialize in feeding on the wood and inner bark of various deciduous trees.

The host range of Ropalopus includes a wide variety of hardwoods, such as oaks, maples, beeches, and fruit-bearing trees like cherries and plums. While they often target trees that are already weakened by environmental stress or disease, high population densities can lead to the infestation of seemingly healthy specimens.

The biological cycle of this pest involves a complex transformation from egg to larva, pupa, and adult beetle. Adult beetles typically emerge during the summer months to mate and oviposit in bark crevices. The larvae bore deep into the trunk, creating extensive tunnels that compromise the internal structure of the tree over one or more years.

The extent of damage caused by Ropalopus can be severe, leading to limb dieback and, in extreme cases, tree death. By disrupting the vascular system through their feeding galleries, the larvae prevent the proper transport of nutrients and water.
