While primarily admired by collectors for its striking appearance and transparent wing spots, it can act as a plant pest in its native habitats, as the larvae feed voraciously on the foliage of various woody host plants.

Systematically, the species is classified within the order Lepidoptera. Its lifecycle involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. As with most Saturniids, the adult moth does not feed, focusing its energy entirely on reproduction, whereas the larval stage is the primary period of development and environmental impact.
